Key Terms


Anticipatory- the stages before the actual event.

Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)- controls involuntary nervous system functions and is subdivided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.

Central Nervous System (CNS)- consists of the brain and spinal chord and coordinates all of the activities of the entire nervous system.

Habituation- building of tolerance to a stimuli.

Language Behavior- the way a person communicates that is specific to the individual.

Language Culture-certain behaviors that can be understood as characteristics of a language that is attributed to a certain culture (i.e southern accent).

Looking-Glass Self- how a person thinks that other people see them. In other words, this is a person's understanding of their public image.


Self-Perceived Competence-  "the participants'perceptions of their own communication competence" (Jung & McCroskey 2004).

Self-Report- A valid and reliable PSA test that is taken and/or scored by the self.

Somatic Nervous System (SNS) controls voluntary nervous system functions related to sensation.

State Communication Apprehension- apprehension that every speaker feels from time to time because of situational factors.

Temperament- "biologically rooted individual differences in behavioral tendencies that are present in early life and are relatively stable across different situations and over the course of time" (Beatty,  McCrosky & Heisel 1998).

Trait Communication Apprehension-apprehension towards communication that a person feels all the time. Only some people have this.
